It is a musical memorial to the heritage of the Grimsby fishing industry, honouring the contribution made by those in the fishing industry who were instrumental in feeding the nation. The bespoke ensemble for this work comprises 3 saxophones, trumpet, double bass, guitar, trombone and percussion, and will commission new music from Alan Barnes working with Pat McCarthy, interspersed with humour form Alan, and poetry from Josie. Josie Moon has written the poems especially for the commission.

We wish to thank the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre for the opportunity to use the Ross Tiger for the photo shoot.

Alan Barnes worked closely with local musician Pat McCarthy. Pat has a great deal of knowledge and understanding of Grimsby and the surrounding area, an outstanding guitarist and composer, but with a history of boat building and remarkably as a youth a thatcher by trade!  Alan is an outstanding saxophonist, composer and arranger with an innovative repertoire of exciting music.

Their response to this unusual subject matter is both humorous and respectful of what was a dangerous trade. By selecting the best musicians in their fields to perform the work Alan ensured that the production and performance of the music was of outstanding artistic quality. By bringing together an experienced ensemble of musicians from different regions and backgrounds he ensured that the music will have texture and depth to reflect the subject matter, but also the character of each musician and instrument.

Grimsby Jazz has been promoting music successfully for 12 years and has established an outstanding reputation for high quality programming, collaborative and education projects.
Alan Barnes is a popular and regular performer in Grimsby and has developed a strong connection with the people and the place. It is a measure of our success that we have managed to secure a positive relationship with such a significant international performer and composer.

Musicians :-

Alan Barnes, Dean Masser, Gilad Atzmon saxophones

Mark Nightingale trombone

Neil Yates Trumpet

Pat McCarthy guitar

John Perry drums

REVIEWS of A Grimsby Fish Tale

What a wonderful evening of jazz. We came to see and hear our favourite player Gilad Atzmon and we’re used to him being the star; but last night he was “just” one of eight terrific players. It really couldn’t have been any better !!. Ken

Josie's poetry really brought it all together well. R Edgerton

Yet another brilliant evening of jazz at Gy Jazz
Loved the music, and the poetry was the icing on the cake.
It brought back memories of a time when my own city of Hull was a thriving fishing port. … It's appropriate, that such a piece, as we heard last night, does honour  to the men and women of our fishing heritage. Kath .

Saw some AWESOME jazz and poetry at the Old Clee Club, it honestly blew me away that it was right on me doorstep, A Grimsby Fish Tale was an amazing amalgamation of expressive and lyrical jazz accompanied by the poetry genius of Josie Moon taking us on a somewhat nicer journey than what those fishermen would've taken but boy were we immersed.

A great night of music and poetry.
The subject means a lot to me personally as I went up to the Faeroe Islands and then on to Iceland in 1966 with a fiver kin my back pocket and spent a couple of months working as a deckhand leaner on an Icelandic trawler in Arctic waters and experienced the life and the booze ups afterwards in Reykjavik!  Paul Croft
